With about 10X the miles.

True enough. I still wouldn't have 12.5k worth of confidence in a 15 yo 7 series though.

It's not the V12

Which brings up an interesting question is the novelty of the extra cylinders justify the extra maintenance troubles (price being almost equal)? I'd say at a lower price point (less risk) it does.

Okay. Thoughts? I've been looking at iLs casually, and have horror stories about the M62 from a friend of mine who went through two engines due to timing failures, but I'm still curious and find the low price of entry (and abundance of cars on the market) to be appealing. I already own two E24s, so I'm familiar with the importance of preventative maintenance, but in a real world situation: how are they?

Depends on if you can fix it yourself. If you have to pay for labor, it'll eat you alive.

The M62 is pretty damn bulletproof; cooling system and weird vacuum leaks are common but not a huge issue if you can wrench yourself. If it's a VANOS model (M62TUB), they can be rebuilt or replaced and isn't as difficult as internet folks seem to believe.

On mine (540i), I went through a couple sets of valve cover gaskets; also easy to replace.

the M62 doesn't suffer from timing failures (96-98)......

I'm not sure how the VANOS system in the 99-01 (M62TU, where TU = technical update) is much different that they suffer from timing chain guide failures so much...

Anyway, if you wanna have a bulletproof motor, get a 95-98 740... the 99-01 can be dangerous... I got my 99 740i Sport with a blown headgasket and I fixed it with the help of a friend

here's my thread

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthre…

the problem of course is that the Sport package is only available on the 99-01, which usually have timing guide failure concerns..... You can't have your cake and eat it (easily) with the E38... You have to work for it.... I did, and I love it
